Abstract: While all major philosophical and theological traditions have argued that experiencing some adversity is a necessary condition for the full development of one’s character, no consensus exists about the nature of the specific virtues, traits, and abilities that might develop in response to adversity. In this chapter, we speculate that wisdom is one such virtue that would benefit from extended examination.
