How to be wise: Dealing with the complexities of life

Lindsley, J. (2015). How to be wise: Dealing with the complexities of life. North Charleston, SC: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform.

Abstract: Wisdom can be understood as the ability to deal effectively with complex situations encountered in human affairs. In this book the focus is primarily on those that arise in everyday life. The major goal of the book is to show and teach readers the specific skills for becoming wiser in their deliberations and actions. Following Sternberg’s conceptualization the goal of wisdom is seen as seeking the best outcomes for self, others, and society both in the present and the future. With this goal in mind the general qualities and skills involved in being wise (and failing to be wise) are first considered. Then specific topic areas are explored. These include, among others, making tough judgments and choices; understanding and dealing with others; conceptualizing things on continua rather than as all-or-none; resolving conflicts with others; coping with hardships; and resolving ethical dilemmas.    For example choosing amongst actions affecting self, others, and society involves identifying the factors involved and weighing the impacts of multiple options for actions on self, others, and society, while being prepared to change course as further information is sought and acquired.  Creative solutions to dilemmas are sought through structured examinations of their unique details in order to find win-win-win solutions.  Meanwhile the uncertainty of outcomes is accepted.    The book is meant to appeal to academic-minded persons, as it is based on the psychological literature on wisdom; as well as to appeal to a popular audience, as it is directed towards specific ways of being wise in everyday life situations.  The book contains many specific examples and dilemmas to contemplate.  There are also exercises included so that the reader can get practice in applying the concepts and techniques on his/her own. In these ways the book is designed to serve as a textbook for courses in wisdom.
